Google warning

Google says “This site may be hacked”

The label appears under your listing in search results and many people stop clicking. Google adds it when it finds spam content or pages that were added without the owner's permission. It goes away after the site is cleaned and reviewed.

What triggers the label

Find the cause

  1. Open Google Search Console and check the Security issues report for sample URLs.
  2. Search site:yourdomain.com and look for pages you did not create.
  3. Run our free website security check to compare the crawler and visitor views and look for spam links, redirects and spam sitemap entries.

Remove it

  1. Clean the site completely, including backdoors — otherwise the spam returns and the next review is slower.
  2. Remove unknown users and sitemaps from Search Console.
  3. Make spam URLs return 404 or 410.
  4. Request a review in the Security issues report and describe what you fixed.
Reviews for hacked-site issues usually take from a few days to a couple of weeks. A thorough cleanup before the first request avoids being rejected and starting over.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove the warning without cleaning the site?

No. The label is tied to Google detecting compromised content. It is removed after a successful review of a cleaned site.

Does the warning affect my ranking?

It reduces clicks immediately, and the spam content itself can dilute or damage your rankings until it is removed from the index.

Why do I not see any spam on my site?

Many infections show spam only to search engine crawlers. Compare what Google sees with what a visitor sees, or use our free check.

Need it fixed?
